Why do a Math New Year’s Resolution Activity?
This New Year’s goal tessellation is a perfect blend of math, art, and reflection. It’s a fantastic way to:
- Review Math Concepts: The six stations of the hexagon will take students on a journey of reflection of the past year, review math concepts, and stretch their thinking with some logic puzzles.
- Choose Just One Word: Students will be prompted to think of one word to set their intention for the upcoming year.
- Set New Year’s Resolutions: The activity prompts students to reflect on their goals for the year, making it a meaningful and personal experience.
How it works:
Preparation:
- Print Materials: Copy a “My Hexagon Resolution” page for each student, a title page for your display, and hexagon direction cards for each station.
- Set Up Stations: Create stations around your classroom, each with a different hexagon direction card. (This is optional but a fun way to get students up and moving around the classroom.)
Activity Steps:
- Small Group Work: Divide your class into small groups and assign each group a station.
- Station Rotation: Have groups rotate through the stations, spending about 5 minutes at each station.
- Design and Color: After the students complete the station prompts, they can color their hexagons!
- Cut and Assemble: Once the hexagons are complete, students can cut them out and prepare them for the collaborative display.
Creating a Collaborative Display:
- Arrange the Hexagons: Arrange the hexagons on a bulletin board or wall, fitting them together to create a beautiful tessellation.
- Add a Title: Title your display with the title provided: “NEW YEAR MATH TESSELLATIONS.”
By incorporating this tessellation activity into your classroom, you’ll provide your students with a fun and engaging way to start the new year, help them focus and think about what they want to accomplish for the new year, and reinforcing important math concepts.
