Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to check in with your students throughout the year? The Math Tessellations are versatile activities that can be used throughout the year, to show progress from the beginning to the end of the year. Let’s hear about the different hexagon tessellations you can use: the start of the year, the middle of the year, and the end of the year.
Start of the Year: Math About Me Tessellation
The beginning of the year is a great time to utilize the Math About Me Tessellation. As students are getting to know each other, this activity provides a unique opportunity to learn about their interests and personalities with a math twist! There are 6 stations that you can utilize to not only get to know your students but also acclimate them with your classroom rules and routines. The activity will help you get to know your students as math learners too.
Middle of the Year: New Year’s Math Resolutions Tessellation
As the school year progresses, students can create a new tessellation and set new year’s math goals. This is a fun 6 station activity where students will choose a one-word resolution, think about their goals in math, and complete some age-appropriate math puzzles. This is a great way to check in with your students and create a fun winter bulletin board.

End of the Year: Math Reflection Tessellation
At the end of the year, you can have students create a final tessellation that summarizes their math journey. They can include their favorite math concepts, their biggest accomplishments, as well as complete some summer themed puzzle activities. This activity is a great way to finish the school year and can be a powerful tool for self-reflection and growth.
