End of Year Math Project: Real-World Math Career Fair

It’s the final stretch of the school year. Testing is behind you. Energy is running low (yours and theirs). And you’re staring down several weeks of keeping them engaged without completely losing your mind.

Sound familiar?

That’s exactly why I created the Math Career Fair Project—and why it’s quickly become my go-to end of the year math project for middle school.

What Is the Math Career Fair Project?

It’s a hands-on, real-world end of the year math project where students choose a career, create a display poster about how math is used in that job, and design a math activity tied to their chosen profession. Then, we host a full-on Career Fair Day in the classroom. Students rotate through each other’s stations, solve the activities, and learn how math shows up in all kinds of jobs.

From chefs and architects to personal trainers and event planners, this project makes math feel relevant—and way more fun than another packet of review problems.

Why This Is the End of Year Math Project You Need

Here’s the truth: the last few weeks of school are tough. You need something that’s…

  • Engaging enough to hold student attention
  • Easy enough to prep without taking hours of your time
  • Meaningful enough to feel like real learning is still happening

The Math Career Fair Project checks every box. It’s creative, student-led, and tied to real-world application. It gets students thinking critically, writing their own math problems, and using math to solve challenges that actually make sense.

And best of all? They’re proud of what they create.

What’s Included in the Project?

You’ll get everything you need to launch this with confidence:

  • Brainstorm & planning pages
  • Student-friendly directions
  • Career list + math prompts
  • Templates for posters and activities
  • A full rubric for grading
  • Optional extensions for high school/career readiness
  • A sample project to model expectations
  • And a passport to make the gallery walk extra fun

End the Year with Purpose (Not Just Survival)

This end of the year math project has completely changed how I close out the school year. It gives structure to those weird final weeks, makes math meaningful again, and allows every student to shine in their own way.

You’ll love how invested your students become—and they’ll love the chance to be creative while still doing real math.
