In today’s classroom, it’s essential to make learning fun and engaging – let’s face it, it is not easy to hold students’ attention! One effective way to do this is through collaborative math activities. These activities not only reinforce math concepts but also foster teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Let’s explore two popular collaborative math activities: math posters and math tessellations.

Math Posters: A Colorful Collaboration

One exciting collaborative math activity is creating math posters. In this activity, students work together to complete a math review. Once the review is finished, each student is assigned a specific part of a larger picture to color. The fun part is that students don’t know what the final picture will be until all the pieces are put together.

Math Tessellations: A Patterned Puzzle

Another engaging collaborative math activity is creating math tessellations. Tessellations are patterns formed by repeating a single shape.

One of my favorite math tessellations is the Math About Me Tessellation. In this activity, students complete a series of stations to gather information about themselves. This information is then used to fill in sections of a pre-made tessellation. When all the Math About Me Tessellations are combined, they create a beautiful bulletin board that reflects your class!

Other fun math tessellations are the Math Review Tessellations. In these activities, students review math concepts by completing questions within the pre-made tessellation. The tessellation is then decorated based on their answers. When all the students complete the activity, you can create a visually stunning tessellation bulletin board!
